Forging is the working of metal by plastic deformation. It is distinguished from machining, the shaping of metal by removing material, such as drilling, sawing, milling, turning or grinding, and from casting, wherein metal in its molten state is poured into a mould, whose form it retains on solidifying.
There are five common mechanized metalworking techniques:
Drop Forging is a technique for forcing metal into a dye by striking it with a hammer. This process is one of the original forging methods and was mainly used by blacksmiths for making dies. Two dies can now be mechanically hammered together to quicken production lines and double the Manufacturers production. Drop Forging is often used for Automobile Components.
Open Forging is what comes to mind when people think about forgings. This method requires a high level of skill and experience working the material into shape by hitting with an Anvil and using various tools. This process is still used for the traditional forgings such as Horseshoes and customized metal components.
Press Forging is the common method for forging tools. The production involves using one of the above to pressure the metal into a fixed die, slowly deforming to the Manufacturers required shape.
Roll Forging is accomplished by compressing a piece of heated metal between two die embedded rollers, which will force the metal into conforming to the required die shape. Multiple rollers are used for mass production methods. This is another very popular method in the Stockholding and distributing metal market.
Cold Forging is used for smaller objects like screws and metal wire. Cold metal is extruded through a particular shape to produce items such as a threaded screw. This method is cheap and can be effective when producing in high volume.
C & N International commonly use roll forgings as we hold Billet in stock and can produce to the customers bar or flat requirements within a very good lead time. All of the forgers and heat treatment sub contractors C & N use are all Rolls Royce approved and well established Worldwide.
C & N use forgers in the UK, Germany, Italy, South Africa, Taiwan and United States of America. All can offer competitive lead times and provide an excellent service providing full traceability throughout any conversion and finishing of material.
We can offer on most forgings and would be more than happy to discuss any forging requirement you may have.
